BMW Assembly elects new chairman
Cllr. Peter Kennedy from Donegal Town has been elected, unopposed, as the new Chairman of the Border, Midland and Western Regional Assembly at their Annual General Meeting held on Friday 22nd November, 2002 in Ballaghaderreen.

Cllr. Kennedy, a former chairman of Donegal Co. Council, has extensive experience of both local and regional government and is currently a member of the Border Regional Authority, the Northern Regional Fisheries Board and the Agriculture Committee of Donegal Co. Council.

In accepting the position, Cllr. Kennedy stated that he was “both honoured and privileged to be elected to such a prestigious position and he looked forward to working for the betterment of the region.”

The BMW Regional Operational Programme provides for an investment of over €4bn over the 2000-2006 period under the National Development Plan. The EU contribution to the Operational Programme over seven years is almost €400m across the four structural funds – ERDF, ESF, EAGGF, FIFG. While considerable progress has been made in the regional programme, in particular non-national roads, rural water services, micro-enterprise development, urban and village renewal, it is imperative to ensure the roll-out of funds in all of the sub-measures in the Regional Operational Programme.

Cllr. Kennedy informed the members that he was awaiting anxiously the launch of the new National Spatial Strategy which will have a profound influence in the region.

Mr. Gerry Finn, Director of the BMW Regional Assembly, congratulated Cllr. Kennedy on his appointment and he looked forward to working with him over the coming twelve months. He also paid tribute to the out-going chairman, Cllr. Joe Digan for promoting investment in the region during his term of office.
