Hong Kong’s Effluent Gets the UV Treatment
In order to meet more stringent requirements on the Total Residue Chlorine of discharged effluent, Hong Kong’s Drainage Services Department has recently installed two Hanovia ‘Photon’ medium pressure UV disinfection systems. The units were ordered following a series of successful trials.

The Hanovia systems will treat secondary effluent from local residents and businesses from the Kwu Tung area in the New Territories. They are replacing existing chlorination disinfection equipment.

The small footprint of Hanovia’s medium pressure UV systems are ideally suited to this application as space is severely limited. In addition, using a single, medium pressure UV lamp in each chamber offers less resistance to fluid flow than conventional low pressure UV systems, resulting in lower overall head loss. A single medium pressure lamp configuration also enables effective monitoring of UV output and energy and component savings for the system operators.
